Sound Baths: 3 benefits of letting the vibrations wash over you

Music as a method of healing has been around for centuries, but you may have recently noticed Sound Baths cropping up in studios everywhere due to their mass appeal and accessibility.

Sound Baths utilize waves and vibrations to soothe you into a deep state of meditation. Unlike guided meditation, these sessions use music and sound instruments such as gongs and bowls. “Bathing” in the sounds is a great de-stressor—especially if you’re new to meditation.

Who doesn’t love listening to music to unwind after a long day? Sound Baths take that relaxation a step further through their immersive nature. Instead of working with mantras and your breath alone, you get to sink into the sounds around the room, letting your mind drift where the waves take you.

Personally, I always look forward to participating in a sound bath with the Razz Yoga community. Once we lie down on our mats, it feels like a sensory journey where my focus is tuned into the vibrations. This relaxing experience is often what draws students to the class, but sound baths are not only relaxing they have tangible benefits for participants including:

Enhanced Creativity and Spirituality

The sound waves will relax you into a deep meditative state, quieting restless thoughts and making way for mental clarity. From this point of bliss and openness, it’s common for participants to feel more open in a spiritual sense, or to tap into a creative flow.

Reduced Stress

The sound vibrations allow your mind to settle into the present moment. The use of sound and music often draws us further into our current environment, and the stress of life outside the room can finally melt away.

Better Sleep

Sound Baths are great for people who suffer from insomnia. Intrusive thoughts and a restless mind can often be at the root of laying awake at night. Sound waves help not only relax the body, but the mind as well. Vibrations make you more present, and often improve your mood, making you less stressed and restless. If you participate in a Sound Bath in the hours leading up to sleep, you’re likely to get a good night's rest.

In the upcoming Winter Solstice Sound Bath at Razz Yoga, Nilvis, one of our lead instructors, will use various instruments such as Tibetan singing bowls, crystal bowls, gongs and chimes to create a harmonious and immersive sonic journey to guide you through the longest night of the year.

Nilvis' first Sound Bath was years ago, and the experience was transformative.

"I was drawn to the sound bath experience the same way many of us were, it was offered at a studio and I went. Music has been around me all of my life, and I have always understood how sound can be a tool for transporting myself to a place where I feel expansive. It was in those first sound bath sessions though that I found something more. It felt like my soul had come home." — Nilvis

On December 22nd, allow the soothing vibrations to release tension and restore your inner balance. Embrace the serene energy of this celestial event as we come together to celebrate the longest night of the year and welcome the return of light.
