An Opportunity for a Summer Slowdown

You’re not alone if the past few months have felt like a mad dash to the finish line. There’s the pressure of prioritizing new year goals, the hustle and bustle that accompanies the spring thaw, followed by graduation parties, holiday cookouts and gatherings… not to mention any other curveballs life has thrown your way. Much like the seasons, our life and our practice change in rhythm, intensity and intention. We’d love to invite you to take a pause and catch your breath with us this summer at Razz.

Finding Balance in your Summer Practice

In yoga and related traditions such as Ayurveda, summer commonly symbolizes energy, transformation, illumination, and outward expansion. The season is viewed both physically and spiritually as a time when heat and light are at their peak, influencing the body, mind, and emotional state. In yogic philosophy, light frequently symbolizes knowledge and self-awareness. The sun becomes a metaphor for inner illumination and vitality. The heat of summer is sometimes interpreted symbolically as the “inner fire” that fuels change and self-development.

Simultaneously, yogic traditions emphasize the importance of energetic balance. Too much heat or intensity is believed to create imbalance, so summer yoga emphasizes moderation and cooling practices. Symbolically, the season teaches:

  • Balance instead of overexertion

  • Steadiness instead of burnout

  • Awareness instead of impulsiveness

Gentle yoga helps maintain circulation, incorporates less intense stretching and controlled breathing that assist the body in feeling less sluggish during these humid months. Cooling-oriented practices often include:

  • Forward Folds - calming and introspective, these poses may help quiet the nervous system, release tension in the back and neck, encourage slower breathing and create a grounding effect

  • Twists - whether seated or reclining, twists improve spinal flexibility, release muscular tension, stimulate digestion and create a sensation of resetting or refreshing the body

  • Restorative Poses - through the use of props and physical support, these poses are particularly beneficial in hot weather as they encourage balancing energy rather than constantly pushing the body

  • Slower Vinyasa Flows - while fast-paced yoga can generate substantial internal heat, slower vinyasa sequences maintain movement while allowing the body to regulate temperature more comfortably and with ease

Celebrating the Summer Solstice

The summer solstice marks the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has been significant in many ancient cultures as it marks a peak of sunlight and seasonal energy. Today, summer solstice events are held worldwide to honor the mythos and symbolism of various yoga disciplines.

Join Nilvis Frederick on June 20th for our Summer Solstice Sound Bath where we’ll be celebrating the magic of the solstice in community with each other. You’ll be invited to settle in with props of your choice as Nilvis uses her sound bowls to guide you through a journey of relaxation, where all you need to do is arrive and simply be. This meditative experience is gentle and accessible. Singing bowls and other sound tools are used to “bathe” you in sound vibrations and tones that promote relaxation, mindfulness and a calming sensory experience. A sound bath is an excellent way to encourage stillness, rest, inward attention and nervous system recovery that balances high summer energy. We can’t wait to see you there!
