Did you know the human body is made up of about 70% of water?
70 PERCENT!!!! That’s a lot of water people! Personally, I believe this is why it’s so challenging to drink enough water on a daily basis, because our bodies need so much of it to function properly. Some people can guzzle down water all day long while others can barely stand the taste. On top of that, if you are exercising on a daily basis you should really be drinking twice the amount you do now to ensure proper hydration. Sometimes it’s easy to forget to drink water with our busy schedules. So, an easy way to keep yourself in tune with your hydration is to bring a refillable water bottle with you everywhere you go. Bring it to work, to your hot yoga class, to the dinner table etc. You’d be surprised how much water you would drink by simply making this a habit. Trust me, it’s a great habit to form and provides so many health benefits (not to mention helping the environment out with your reusable water bottle). You can’t avoid drinking your daily dose of water because I hate to break it to you, but it’s an essential part of being healthy.
Whenever I talk to clients about caring for their bodies, the first thing I ask before diet and exercise is how much water do you drink? I ask this because drinking water is a non-negotiable when it comes to the health of a human being. You should especially drink a lot of water if you’re exercising, pregnant, breast-feeding and live in a warm environment. But even if you’re none of the previously mentioned, many health authorities say you should still try to drink at least 64 oz. a day. I personally think it should be more than that, but that’s just one gal’s opinion. Here’s something to think about, during a hot yoga class, your body can lose up to 50 ounces of water! Therefore, you should be drinking at least 100-150 ounces during/afterwards to replenish the water you lost. Our entire body relies on water and couldn’t live without so make sure you drink up!
If you have a hard time drinking water I highly suggest infusing it. Add fruit, ginger, mint or cucumber to give it some added vitamins and flavor. You’d be surprise how addicting and refreshing it tastes! My personal favorite is drinking lemon water after a hot yoga class. Citrus flavors help quench your thirst so it keeps you feeling hydrated for longer. Infusing your water with lemon can also help aid in digestion and boost your immune system. It’s a win-win. I know for some, drinking enough water is a challenge, but try adding some extra flavor to help you stay hydrated. Try it out this weekend and let us know what you think! Have a wonderful week and don’t forget to hydrate. Namaste.
